Over the last decade Finchley has become one of the most sought after areas of North West London for young Jewish families and the need for a new primary school to serve the Finchley and surrounding communities has become acutely apparent as the demand cannot be met by other Jewish schools nearby.
I am delighted therefore that a talented and determined group of young parents and prospective parents have come together to seek to fulfill this need and to turn the desire into reality. The plans that they will outline this evening will demonstrate the thought that has gone into the process and the interaction with those of you who have expressed an interest in the proposal will take the vision one step closer to realisation.
In recent years I have become increasingly convinced that, despite the voices of gloom and doom that are often heard, we are witnessing the beginning of a remarkable resurgence of commited Jewish life and practice and I have no doubt that this is due in no small measure to those who have built our burgeoning day school movement. Benjamin Perl has been in the forefront of this and his support for our plans is deeply appreciated.
I have no doubt that under the inspired leadership of Rabbi Mirvis; the dedicated efforts of the school committee and the support of the United Synagogue together with your support, both financial and practical, the new Finchley school will become another jewel in our communal crown.
